Christmas Season 2007

The Christmas season 2007 in Battle was a successful one and everyone seemed to have fun. Lights-on Saturday was well attended and over 260 children came to see Father Christmas.

St. Mary’s Church organised a very successful Christmas Tree Festival which attracted a large crowd and complemented the other activities. This ensured people were entertained and looked after during the whole day. Shaw Leisure supplied Entertainment for the children on the Abbey Green and Saxonwood Women’s Institute catered for everyone with delicious cakes and welcome cups of tea and coffee.

Battle’s Gala night evening was for the brave hearted for the second season as it was a wet and windy evening, which however never stops the fun loving shops and businesses in Battle. The costumes were colourful as well as inspired choices and many customers and clients had a chance to have a conversation on a more personal note. BJ Godwin and his Band entertained in Vicary’s showroom and supported the local Beavers and Scout groups in the process. The best dress Christmas window went to Judith Herbert from Juel at the entrance of Old Ladies Court and the best dressed Individual that evening was Ian Davies from AbbeyGate Properties; the best dressed business that evening was Nationwide Building Society, they even performed numerous 5-minute Pantomime’s during the day.

Christmas Lights and Gala Shopping Night

The Chamber organises Christmas lights throughout the Town with a "Switch-On" ceremony opened by Father Christmas (last Saturday in November). On the subsequent Gala Night (second Thursday after Lights "Switch-On" in December) the retailers don fancy dress, run competitions and raffles and often offer refreshments of a seasonal variety to their visitors.

May Mediaeval Fayre

This event takes place on the Abbey Green on the Sunday and Monday of the late May Bank Holiday. There are craft stalls, entertainers of all types - jugglers, jesters, fire-eaters etc. There is also maypole dancing by the Merry Maypolers, and on the Monday there is a grand parade followed by the crowning of the May Queen and dancing by the children from the local Junior School.

The 2007 Fayre was very wet but we would like to thank everyone who made the effort to come and take part. As usual the stalls were very good, especially some of the new people who took part, i.e. Hands on History and the 1066 Falconary.
